Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs Commencement Speech
at Stanford

Ethos (credibility): To me Steve Jobs did a really good job "connecting the dots" because he related it to the audience as well as preforming an outstanding speech. He kept saying, "connecting the dots" because you can't connect the dots to the future you can only look back at your past and see how all of the things in the past have led you to where you are now and you can only hope it all worked out how you would've planned.

Pathos (emotional connection): He started off his speech by saying he had three stories to give. The first is about how he was adopted to a family who had a father who never graduated high school and a mother who never graduated college. There was this big controversy with his birth mother and parents today because she wanted him to go to college, which he eventually did, but not for long. Jobs decided he didn't know what he wanted to do and felt as if he was just wasting his parents money. The second story had to do with love and loss, he started Apple in his parents garage, but then got fired from his own company, later that became the best thing to ever happen to him. Lastly, death, "if you live each day as you live your last someday you'll be right," he looks at his life this way and always try to be happy.

Logos (organization): Jobs starts off his speech basically with how he starts off his life, from when he was born until now. He tells us stories that connect to each other and lead to the ending.

NBA Players

Most of the time when we think of basketball players we the first thing that comes to mind is usually not how stylish they are or what sense of fashion they have. Basketball players aren’t supposed to care really what they look like in my opinion because they are recognized by all for their efforts on the court not what they look like or what designer they are wearing. I get the fact that they might want to stand out more then they already do so wearing “colors that conflict” will really make them stand out even more.
Morris compares the style of the basketball players as nerdy or preppy, which Carlton, off of the show “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” got made fun of because he looked so different compared to Will, who wore baggy clothes and hats, which was cool back then to do, no one would’ve made fun of him because he looked “normal.”
These basketball players are setting a new trend that more and more people are going to start commenting on and noticing. The more players that they get to start looking at their outfits and pay attention to what they look like this new trend will become the new “normal.” Which leads to a point of what was the “normal” back in the day? People like Carlton got made fun of and now what he wore would be thought as better then Will. Its funny to see how things can change throughout the years and that the old normal now will become the new normal.
